Johnson - Alexander

Source: Crawfordsville Weekly Journal, June 19, 1896

A post mortem examination was held over the remains of Alexander Johnson at his late residence yesterday afternoon. The physicians who performed the operation were Drs. Montague and Rankin. Drs. Keegan, May and Irwin were expected to be present but could not arrive in time. The man had not eaten any food to amount to anything for 17 weeks and the cause of his death was a complete mystery. Nearly every doctor in town had tried his skill on the patient but without avail. He only lived as long as he did by means of rectal injections and by a tube passed down his throat to the stomach. The examiners found that there was a large internal cancer involving 3/4 of the stomach, and that it had also attached the esophagus and stopped the passage of food to the stomach. The liver was also abnormally large. - kbz
